Child Safety Gate: Do I Need One?

The truth is you made need more than one child safety gate. Child safety gates are used to protect small children in a variety of circumstances. Safety gates become popular when people needed a way to keep their toddler from falling down the stairs. The safety gates were fairly easy to install and bad accidents were avoided. Unfortunately, there are many accidents that happen in the home and parents realized that safety gates in other areas would protect their children. Child safety gates have been used to keep children out of kitchens, especially small kitchens. Smaller kitchens do not allow for a lot of room and sometimes parents do not realize their toddler has entered the kitchen. Many children have been burned from parents transferring various foods or from children touching stoves and ovens. There is really no way to predict what your child will try to touch, so safety gates can eliminate any potential problems.

Child Safety Gates can be used to keep your child out of rooms you prefer they not be in or out of sections of your home you prefer they not be in. If you like to have your front or back door open when the weather is nice, a safety gate can make sure your child does not get outside. Safety gates can keep your child away from fire places, laundry rooms, or any animals that may put them at risk. Safety gates can and will keep your child safe. All you have to do is determine the right type of safety gate(s) for you.

Child Safety Gate Types

There are different types of child safety gates that allow the consumer choose what is right for their home, their child, and their safety needs. Below we will give you a brief summary of each kind of child safety gate.

  • Transparent Kid Shield- The Kid Shield is shatterproof plastic that can protect your child on stairs and railings. The shield prevents children from falling through the spindles and is very easy to install. The Kid Shield is great for outside balconies or any area where a child might slip through and get hurt.

  • The Kiddy Guard- The Kiddy Guard is a retractable gate made of a laminated polyester mesh. His gate is great for areas where there is not room for a gate to swing open and when you unlatch the gate it basically disappears.

  • Hearth Gates- Hearth Gates are made to go around the hearths and they are made to withstand the heat or fire from your fireplace. You could also use it around a wood burning stove or an outside grill.

You will need room to swing the gate door open and you will need to make sure you buy a gate wide enough to cover your opening. There are gates today that can block a very wide opening and gates that can be mounted at an angle.

Pool Child Safety Fences

Because of the many children that have drowned in pools throughout the years, the state of Florida enacted a swimming pool safety act. This act states that every pool built after January 1, 2001 be equipped some form of safety device to prevent children from entering a pool alone. Not all U.S states have this law, but the safety fences are highly recommended. The pool safety fences are can be made of a variety of materials, but most are made of mesh material.

Safety Pool Fences should be at least 4’ to 5’ tall. The end(s) of the fence should not be easy to remove. In fact, they shouldn’t be able to be removed with out tools. For the safety and easy access of those in the pool the pool fence should not be closer than 20 inches from the water’s edge. Pool fences should also be used around spas or Jacuzzis.

If a safety pool fence will not work in your pool area you can also use a pool alarm. Pool alarms go off is the doors to the pool are opened. There is also a pool alarm that is supposed to go off if someone goes into the water. Pool alarms might be helpful when you are home; someone needs to be home to hear the alarm. Pool safety fences are more popular because they not only keep the homeowner’s children out of the pool, but also any children that live in the neighborhood.

Child Driveway Barrier

Child driveway barriers can prevent your child from running into the road. The barrier can also prevent balls or other toys from rolling out into the street. These barriers are typically not used to contain children; they are basically used as a line to not cross. Depending on the barrier you buy they can range from three feet to five feet high and 18 to 25 feet long. Some barriers are made of a weather resistant mesh that retracts and extends easily.

There are some different types of driveway safety barriers. Some extend and retract while others are attached to poles anchored in the ground. If you have a fence around your yard a driveway barrier could create a nice area for your children to play. In addition, a barrier will tell drivers to stay away from the driveway. There are a variety of products available on the Internet and the prices are reasonable.

Child Safety Locks & Latches

Child safety locks and latches can and should be used in many places throughout your home. Below are the different types of safety locks you can use.

Child ID Kits

Many parents do not even like to think about Child ID Kits because it reminds them of what could happen- their child could be taken. Although the thought is scary, parents need to have the necessary information ready if the worst should happen. There are a variety of Child ID Kits you can choose from and we will explain the different items you will get or can add to your kit.

Your Child ID Kit should include recent photographs and the photographs should also be placed on a disk. Disks allow the media and police to quickly spread pictures around. You should also have your child’s fingerprints in a protective plastic sleeve; most ID kits will provide you the materials you need for fingerprints. If your child is old enough to go to the dentist ask for a dental chart and place the info in your kit. Make sure you know your child’s blood type and place this info and any other health-related issues in the ID kit. Some kits offer a DNA self collection kit; this can be very beneficial. The last thing you need in your Child ID Kit is a complete physical description of your child. The description should include your child’s height, weight, hair color, eye color, and any distinguishing marks such as scars or birthmarks. You can get your free child id kit from Registered Offenders List.

Bathtub Safety Items

Bathtubs can be a fun place for your child if the proper safety items are in place. Some of the child safety items you should consider include:

Faucet Covers- Faucet covers are made of a soft, rubber product. They were designed to cover up the faucet, because many children have fallen and hit their faces, or heads, and sustained serious injuries. The safety faucet covers often look like animals or you may find your child’s favorite character. They do add fun and safety to any bathtub.

Infant Baths & Bath Safety Seats- Children under one year really do not have the coordination to prevent injuries in the bathtub. There are many bathtubs and safety seats that adhere to the bottom of the bathtub. These safety items keep the child safe and they also make bath time easier for the parent.

Splash Guards- Children love to splash in the bathtub and although parents try to prevent it, water almost always ends up outside of the tub. Even a small amount of water is dangerous for the parent and the child, because water causes people to slip easily. A splash guard spreads from one wall to the other and keeps the water inside. It rolls up for easy storage.

Bath Mats- Bath mats are soft and adhere to the bottom of a bathtub. There is a texture that does not allow children to easily slip or slide in the bathtub. Bath mats are great for children that have recently stopped using a bath safety seat. The mat helps them learn how to safely move around the bathtub.
